I have seen the small chunks of rainbow in the clouds called "sun dogs" before, but never a large section of a rainbow. But this entirely circled the sun!! Wow!
Have you seen one of these? Have photos to share?

Sun dogs are very common up here in the Great White North, in the winter, when there are ice crystals in the air that deflect/catch the sun's rays. I didn't see them much in Eastern Canada where the sky is 'smaller' (i.e. more trees) but out here on the prairie in January and February -- wow! :-)
ReplyDeleteThat is really neat......it's exciting when nature shares something like that unexpectedly!
ReplyDeletethat is really amazing (and your picture is very cool!)
ReplyDeleteand the first thing that comes to my mind is "how could one get that look with fiber?!"
Margaret, as much as I would like to see them often, I don't want to go back to the cold. Iowa was enough.
ReplyDeleteBev, not sure how to do it in fabric, but worth a try by somebody. Anyone who wants to use the photo of the sun rainbow has my permission to have at it. Love to see it.
Nancy
They are very high up in the atmosphere, over 35000 ft. Usually means rain or storms will be coming. In South Carolina we have them all year.
