Do you Have a Favorite Weed?

Having created art inspired by tree and shrub seeds for several years, I find myself drawn to seed forms in all kinds of plants.

This little weed I found in my herb pots has a bright yellow flower and three part leaves and a really interesting seed pod. The pod is very angular even the stems that hold the pods go off on their own direction.

If memory serves me correctly, it is a form of oxalis. The little pods taste like pickles.I remember eating them in childhood.

Do you have favorite wild edibles and weeds that you enjoy?

  1. yes yes.. I do and it does not seem to grow here in Georgia. I'm sure it's considered a weed because it's a low growing ground cover that gets into shady places of lawns. The leaves are quarter to half dollar sized, round with scalloped edges and it has a pleasant, pungent smell when walked on. Our yard was full of it and the smell always reminds me of my wedding. I stood barefooted on these friendly weeds.

  2. can't say that I have a favorite weed -- unless you count the lilac bushes which my husband refers to that way because he's allergic to them!

looking forward to seeing the quilt work that comes out of your newest drawing!

  3. Deb, I have seen that weed as well. Don't recall its name or where. Anyone recognize Bev's description?

Bev, I love the lilacs. We cannot grow the wonderful fragrant variety that I had in Iowa. What an awful thing to be allergic to. My condolences to your husband.

  4. Some people call 'Jolly Jump-ups' weeds -- or perhaps, 'pansy wanna-bes', but they are a favourite of mine, along with yarrow which I love for its long-lasting persona whether fresh or dried.

P.S. Did you know that Mountain Ash berries strongly resemble the berries you paint in your quilts?

  5. Yes, love the Johnny Jump Ups. They are delightful.

No, I do not know the Mountain Ash berries. Must keep my eyes out for them.

    Thanks,
